Writing Reflection #1: Sam Smith "How Do You Sleep?" Video Analysis

My first writing reflection of this media studies course consisted of analyzing Sam Smith's "How Do You Sleep?" music video, while taking into consideration multiple representation theories. The music video presents several ideas on gender bias and gender roles, an ideology that men and women are expected to act or behave a certain way. These stereotypes become damaging to society as it restricts a persons understanding on a specific gender, and prevents one from being themselves. Butler's theory of representation states that "Gender reality is performative." Otherwise speaking, gender reality is only an abstract thought. The ideas of gender bias and roles are assessed in this video through camera angles, mise en scène, lighting, costume, etc. Furthermore, I had to construct a blog on the website "Medium.com". I experimented with multiple layouts, typographies, alignments, proximities, etc. The link below will take you to the blog I created. Through this blog, you can explore the underlying motive of this music video and the overall message being conveyed.

Challenging Principles On Gender Roles and Toxic Masculinity.
